Joliet, IL – January 2, 2026 – Tax season is upon us, and Joliet Township Government is excited to offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for the fifth consecutive season. In partnership with Will County Center for Community Concerns, qualifying individuals can get their taxes prepared for free. 

Understanding that tax preparation can be daunting, Joliet Township’s VITA program aims to make it easy and accessible for those in need. To qualify for this invaluable service, individuals must meet the following criteria: 

  • Income Limit: The program is available to individuals with a total income of less than $67,000. 
  • Residency: There are no residency restrictions. Individuals from any town, county, or region are welcome to participate. 
  • Seniors: The program is free for all seniors (60+ years old), regardless of income level. 

Here’s how individuals can take advantage of this opportunity in just four simple steps: 

  1. Pick up Their Tax Packet: Individuals can visit the Joliet Township Government Office located at 175 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL 60432, to collect their tax packet. 
  2. Complete the Intake Form: They can fill out the intake form and submit it along with their tax documents in the provided packet. The completed packet should be returned to the designated location. 
  3. Sit Back While Their Taxes Are Prepared: The team will meticulously review their documents and prepare their taxes. Once done, individuals will be contacted for a review. 
  4. Review and Sign Electronically: Upon completion, individuals will electronically review and sign their prepared documents. If eligible, they can expect their refund via direct deposit within 7-10 business days.

Joliet Township Proclaims International Migrants Day 2025

At the December 9, 2025 Board Meeting, the Joliet Township Government Board unanimously passed a proclamation recognizing December 18 as International Migrants Day 2025. This proclamation recognizes the dignity, humanity, and contributions of migrants across the globe and calls attention to the complex realities shaping migration today.

The full text of the proclamation is as follows:

“Proclamation: International Migrants Day 2025

WHEREAS, International Migrants Day, observed each year on December 18, recognizes the dignity, humanity, and contributions of migrants across the globe and calls attention to the complex realities shaping migration today; and

WHEREAS, The UN Migration Agency, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), defines a migrant as “any person who is moving or has moved across an international border or within a State away from his/her habitual place of residence, regardless of (1) the person’s legal status; (2) whether the movement is voluntary or involuntary; (3) what the causes for the movement are; or (4) what the length of the stay is”; and

WHEREAS, around the world, individuals and families continue to be uprooted by war, violence, climate emergencies, economic hardship, and the pursuit of safety, stability, and opportunity; and

WHEREAS, this past year marked significant levels of displacement, humanitarian needs, and heartbreaking loss of life for those undertaking perilous journeys, reminding us of the urgent need for global and local commitments to safety, protection, and human rights; and

WHEREAS, even in the face of adversity, migrants show strength, perseverance, and hope, and when communities commit to fostering safety, inclusion, and belonging, that resilience is met with support and opportunity, allowing all residents to thrive together; and

WHEREAS, migrants strengthen labor forces, enrich cultural life, contribute to local economies, and support families and communities both locally and abroad, benefits that grow when migration pathways are fair, humane, and well supported; and

WHEREAS, promoting just, orderly, and compassionate approaches to migration protects human rights, expands economic opportunity, and builds stronger and more inclusive communities for everyone; and

WHEREAS, Joliet Township is proudly home to residents who have migrated from many parts of the world, and their experiences, talents, and cultural traditions enrich the social fabric of our Township;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Joliet Township Government hereby proclaims December 18, 2025, as International Migrants Day in Joliet Township, and encourages all residents to reflect on the contributions of migrants to both our community and the broader society.

Joliet Township Proclaims Universal Human Rights Month 2025

At the December 9, 2025 Board Meeting, the Joliet Township Government Board unanimously passed a proclamation recognizing December as Universal Human Rights Month 2025. This proclamation marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a historic commitment by the global community to uphold the dignity and rights of every human being.

The full text of the proclamation is as follows:

“Proclamation: Universal Human Rights Month 2025

WHEREAS, Universal Human Rights Month, observed each December, marks the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), a historic commitment by the global community to uphold the dignity and rights of every human being; and

WHEREAS, adopted on December 10, 1948, by the United Nations General Assembly, the UDHR established for the first time an international framework affirming that all people are entitled to fundamental rights and freedoms, regardless of identity, background, or circumstance; and

WHEREAS, the UDHR continues to serve as a foundational statement of universal rights and freedoms, informing international principles, guiding human rights protections, and offering a framework for dignity and equality for all people; and

WHEREAS, many of these fundamental rights correspond with protections in the U.S. Constitution, including: freedoms of speech, religion, assembly, and petition protected by the First Amendment; guarantees of due process and equal protection under the law protected by the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments; and the prohibition of slavery and involuntary servitude protected by the Thirteenth Amendment; and

WHEREAS, the Declaration’s principles remind us that protecting human rights requires active participation at global, national, and local levels and that fairness, dignity, and equal opportunity must be upheld in our institutions, neighborhoods, and daily lives; and

WHEREAS, Universal Human Rights Month encourages all people to reflect on these shared values and to work toward a world where each person can live freely, safely, and with their rights fully respected; and

WHEREAS, Joliet Township Government affirms its commitment to advancing fairness, inclusivity, and equitable treatment for all who live, work, and contribute to the community;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Board of Joliet Township Government hereby proclaims December 2025 as Universal Human Rights Month in Joliet Township and encourages residents to recognize the importance of human rights in our community and in society at large, and to support efforts that promote dignity, equality, and justice for all.

At the November 18, 2025 Board Meeting, the Joliet Township Government Board unanimously passed a proclamation recognizing November 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. This proclamation acknowledges the ongoing efforts toward peace, justice, and the realization of the rights of the Palestinian people, as well as reflects on our shared responsibility to uphold human dignity and hustice everywhere.

The full text of the proclamation is as follows:

“Proclamation: International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2025

WHEREAS, the United Nations General Assembly, through resolution 32/40 B of 1977, established November 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People to acknowledge the ongoing efforts toward peace, justice, and the realization of the rights of the Palestinian people; and

WHEREAS, this date also marks the anniversary of the General Assembly’s adoption of resolution 181 (II) in 1947, which addressed the future governance of Palestine, and serves as an annual reminder of the need to advance peace and justice in accordance with international law; and

WHEREAS, the observance of this day highlights the continuing humanitarian challenges faced by Palestinians and reaffirms the global commitment to human dignity, equality, and the pursuit of lasting peace; and

WHEREAS, communities around the world are encouraged to reflect on the importance of compassion, solidarity, and shared responsibility in supporting those affected by displacement and conflict; and

WHEREAS, Joliet Township Government values human rights and the pursuit of peace for all peoples, and joins the international community in recognizing the Palestinian people’s enduring strength, resilience, and hope for a just and secure future;

Joliet Township Proclaims Transgender Day of Remembrance 2025

At the November 18, 2025 Board Meeting, the Joliet Township Government Board unanimously passed a proclamation recognizing November 20 as Transgender Day of Remembrance. This proclamation honors the memory of those whose lives were lost to anti-transgender violence, and to reaffirm our collective commitment to dignity, safety, and respect for all people.

The full text of the proclamation is as follows:

“Proclamation: Transgender Day of Remembrance 2025

WHEREAS, Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed annually on November 20 to honor the memory of those whose lives were lost to anti-transgender violence, and to reaffirm our collective commitment to dignity, safety, and respect for all people; and

WHEREAS, this observance was founded in 1999 by advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith in remembrance of Rita Hester, a Black transgender woman whose 1998 murder in Boston inspired a movement to raise awareness about violence faced by transgender and gender-expansive people worldwide; and

WHEREAS, the term transgender refers to people whose gender identity or expression differs from the sex they were assigned at birth, encompassing a diverse community that has existed across cultures and throughout history; and

WHEREAS, transgender and gender-expansive individuals continue to face alarming levels of violence, discrimination, and exclusion, particularly impacting transgender women of color who experience intersecting forms of racism, sexism, and transphobia; and

WHEREAS, recent years have seen increased public discussion and debate surrounding the rights and recognition of transgender people, with many facing barriers to healthcare, public participation, and safety in their daily lives; and

WHEREAS, despite these challenges, the transgender community continues to demonstrate extraordinary courage, resilience, and leadership, contributing immeasurably to our workplaces, schools, families, and neighborhoods; and

WHEREAS, allyship begins with listening, learning, and treating every person with respect, such as using people’s chosen names and pronouns, challenging misinformation, and supporting inclusive policies that protect the rights and well-being of all; and

WHEREAS, Joliet Township Government recognizes the importance of visibility, education, and compassion in creating a community where everyone can live authentically and without fear;

Toys for Tots Toy Drive Through December 12, 2025

Joliet Township Government is proud to support this year’s Toys for Tots campaign by serving as an official drop-off location. Community members are encouraged to donate new, unwrapped toys to help bring joy to children in need this holiday season.

Donations can be delivered to our office at 175 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. We will be accepting toys through December 12, 2025.

Together, we can help make the holidays magical for children in our community.

Joliet Township Proclaims Native American Heritage Month 2025

At the October 14, 2025 Board Meeting, the Joliet Township Government Board unanimously passed a proclamation recognizing November as Native American Heritage Month. This proclamation celebrates the rich histories, cultures, and contributions of Native American and Alaska Native peoples, and reaffirms the Township’s commitment to honoring their ongoing legacy and connection to the land.

The full text of the proclamation is as follows:

“Proclamation: Native American Heritage Month 2025 

WHEREAS, Native American Heritage Month is observed each November as a time to celebrate the histories, cultures, languages, and traditions of Native American and Alaska Native peoples, and to ensure their stories and contributions continue to be honored and passed on to future generations; and

WHEREAS, the area now known as Joliet Township lies on the traditional and ancestral homelands of Native Nations, including the Council of Three Fires, which consisted of the Bodwéwadmi (Potawatomi), Ojibwe, and Odawa; members of the Illinois or Illiniwek Confederation, such as the Kaskaskia and Peoria; and other tribes that inhabited the broader Illinois region, including the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Sioux), Kiikaapoi (Kickapoo), and Myaamia (Miami), all of whom have cared for and stewarded these lands across generations; and

WHEREAS, despite centuries of violence, forced removal, assimilation policies, and systemic inequities, Native peoples have remained resilient, preserving their cultural practices, protecting sacred traditions, and continuing to lead efforts for justice and sovereignty; and

WHEREAS, Native Americans have played and continue to play a vital role in the history and culture of the United States, serving in the Armed Forces at higher rates than any other group, advancing science, arts, public service, education, environmental stewardship, and contributing to the strength and richness of our democracy; and

WHEREAS, important individuals honored during Native American Heritage Month include historical leaders such as Chief Joseph and Sitting Bull; modern activists like Winona LaDuke and Deborah Parker; pioneering scientists and engineers such as Mary G. Ross and John Herrington; artists including Wes Studi and Marie Watt; and political leaders like Deb Haaland and Sharice Davids. These figures represent diverse contributions across leadership, activism, STEM, arts, and government, highlighting Native American history, achievements, and ongoing cultural significance; and

WHEREAS, Joliet Township Government affirms its responsibility to honor the sovereignty, resilience, and ongoing contributions of Native peoples, and to provide programs and services that recognize and respect the diverse communities that shape our shared history;

NOW THEREFORE BE RESOLVED that the Board of Joliet Township Government hereby proclaims November 2025 as Native American Heritage Month in Joliet Township, and encourages all residents to learn about, reflect upon, and celebrate the heritage and ongoing contributions of Native peoples.

Joliet Township Proclaims Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2025

At the October 14, 2025 Board Meeting, the Joliet Township Government Board unanimously passed a proclamation recognizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month, observed annually in October. This proclamation encourages all residents to stand with survivors, honor the lives lost, and work together toward a future free of domestic violence.

The full text of the proclamation is as follows:

“Proclamation: Domestic Violence Awareness Month 2025 

WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed in October as an opportunity to raise awareness, uplift the voices and stories of survivors, connect communities with resources, educate leaders and policymakers, and recommit ourselves to prevention and the support of those impacted; and

WHEREAS, domestic violence, also referred to as intimate partner violence, encompasses abusive behaviors used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another; and

WHEREAS, domestic violence affects people of all ages, socio-economic statuses, sexual orientations, gender identities, races, religions, and nationalities, and its consequences include physical injury, psychological trauma, fear, and even death, as well as long-term intergenerational harm; and

WHEREAS, although progress has been made, domestic violence remains a widespread and urgent systemic issue that is rooted in the oppression and dehumanization of others and the perpetuation of, but not limited to, harmful social norms & attitudes, lack of accountability for offenders, and inadequate funding of social service programs; and

WHEREAS, national studies show that over one in three women and one in four men in the United States experience rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime, while millions of children are exposed to domestic violence each year, resulting in lasting effects on their safety, development, and well-being; and

WHEREAS, Joliet Township Government recognizes the importance of supporting survivors and honoring the work of local and national organizations, advocates, and community leaders who provide life-saving services, raise awareness, and work toward prevention and justice; and

WHEREAS, building a truly safe community free from domestic violence is the collective responsibility that requires the commitment of every individual, family, community, and system;

NOW THEREFORE BE RESOLVED that the Board of Joliet Township Government hereby proclaims October 2025 as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Joliet Township, and encourages all residents to stand with survivors, honor the lives lost, and work together toward a future free of domestic violence.

CONSIDERANDO que la violencia doméstica afecta a personas de todas las edades, niveles económicos, orientaciones sexuales, identidades de género, razas, religiones y nacionalidades, y sus consecuencias pueden incluir lesiones físicas, trauma psicológico, miedo e incluso la muerte, además de causar daño a largo plazo a las familias; y

CONSIDERANDO que aunque se han logrado avances, la violencia doméstica sigue siendo un problema grave y común que tiene sus raíces en la opresión, la deshumanización y la falta de responsabilidad, además de actitudes y normas sociales dañinas, y la falta de recursos suficientes para los programas de servicios sociales; y
