Joliet Township to host June 2025 CREW Meeting

Joliet Township Government is hosting the next Community Response Engagement Workgroup (CREW) meeting on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 1:00 PM. The meeting will take place in person at the Ozzie & Peggy Mitchell Center at 172 S. Chicago Street, Joliet, IL 60432.
This monthly gathering includes a Comprehensive Training Module, “Violence Intervention and Conflict Mediation,” which will be facilitated by Shelley Williams and Tiffany Williams, Founders of In Tandem Workforce.

Tree Removed at Forest Park Community Center Community Garden

We continue to make exciting progress at the Forest Park Community Center, now proudly part of Joliet Township Government. As part of our efforts to revitalize the on-site community garden, we recently removed a large, dying tree that posed a safety concern for the garden and nearby homes. Taking it down was an important step toward creating a safer, more welcoming space for the neighborhood.

Thank you to Mark Jr. and Mark III from Antomez & Sons Landscaping Tree Service for their professional work in safely removing the tree.

As we move forward with restoring the garden, we’re looking for volunteers to help bring the space to life. If you’d like to get involved, please contact Skyler Reed, Food Pantry Coordinator, at sreed@joliettownship.net.

Sunday, May 25, 2025 at 10am:

Once again this year, Company H 10th Illinois Infantry and Company K 100th Illinois Infantry will be hosting a Memorial Day ceremony at Oakwood Cemetery. They will place flags on the Civil War soldiers’ headstones next to the Rotunda and present a 21-gun salute to honor all veterans. The Col. Frederick A. Bartleson Chapter, National Society Daughters of the Union 1861-1865, is honored to be part of the program.

Let’s honor our heroes together. See you there!

Joliet Township CVI Team Recognized as Part of City’s First CERT Graduating Class

Earlier this month, we celebrated our team’s participation — now we’re proud to join the City of Joliet in recognizing the full graduating class of the first Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program!

Congratulations to the 28 community members who completed this 9-week, 27-hour disaster preparedness course coordinated by the City’s Office of Emergency and Disaster Management.

Special shoutout again to LeShae Hudson, Community Convener, and Magdalena Campos, Community Liaison/Organizer with Joliet Township’s Community Violence Intervention (CVI) team, who were among those honored at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting.

The training covered:

Fire safety
Medical response
Weather spotting
Disaster mental health
Light search and rescue
And more

The next FREE CERT class begins June 10, 2025, with a Saturday session on June 14.

A principios de este mes, celebramos la participación de nuestro equipo — ahora nos enorgullece unirnos a la Ciudad de Joliet para reconocer a toda la primera clase graduada del programa de Respuesta Comunitaria a Emergencias (CERT, por sus siglas en inglés).

¡Felicidades a los 28 miembros de la comunidad que completaron este curso gratuito de preparación para emergencias de 9 semanas y 27 horas, coordinado por la Oficina de Manejo de Emergencias y Desastres de la ciudad!

Un reconocimiento especial nuevamente a LeShae Hudson, Coordinadora Comunitaria, y Magdalena Campos, Enlace/Organizadora Comunitaria del equipo de Intervención contra la Violencia Comunitaria (CVI) del Municipio de Joliet, quienes fueron honradas durante la reunión del Concejo Municipal el martes por la noche.

Joliet Township Animal Control Hosted “Hogs & Dogs” Community Event

On Saturday, May 17, 2025, Joliet Township Animal Control (JTAC) hosted its first-ever Hogs & Dogs event at 2807 McDonough Street in Joliet. From 12 PM to 3 PM, community members gathered for an unforgettable afternoon of food, entertainment, and support for local animals.

The event welcomed motorcycle enthusiasts, pet lovers, and families alike. Guests had the chance to meet adoptable pets and learn about responsible pet ownership while enjoying a vibrant motorcycle display by the Chicago Viclero Motorcycle Club. Live demonstrations were provided by Mallard Point Vet Clinic, Ty Ty the Reptile Guy, and Furiends of Manhattan Pet Pantry, offering fun and educational experiences for all ages.

Local vendors added to the excitement, including Scentsy, Intermode (pet-friendly plants), and Karen’s Pet Grooming, which offered $5 nail trims for pets. Food vendors Hectic Tacos Taco Truck and Brook Bakes satisfied cravings, with 10% of food proceeds generously donated to JTAC.

To promote pet safety, JTAC offered free microchips for the first 10 pets and $10 microchips throughout the day. Supporters also donated $10 or a bag of dog food in exchange for two hot dogs and a drink, helping to care for animals in need.

A New Beginning at Forest Park Community Center: Community Garden Day

On Saturday, May 17, Joliet Township Government’s Forest Park Community Center welcomed a new season of growth and hope with a special Community Garden Day.

Led by Food Pantry Coordinator Skyler Reed and Head Gardener Stephen Rummel-Chadderdon, this event brought together wonderful volunteers from CrossRoads Church, Westbrook, and Gente Unida, along with support from Will County Land Use. Together, they cleaned, mulched, and planted over 240 vegetables, herbs, and flowers, turning the garden into a vibrant space full of life and possibility.

This garden is more than just a place to grow food; it is a place where neighbors connect, learn, and build community. It represents fresh starts, shared effort, and the promise of better days ahead for our local residents.

We are deeply grateful to Will County Land Use and our church partners for their generosity and hard work. Special thanks to CrossRoads Pastor Mick Murray, CrossRoads Pastor Jake Garcia, Margie Ramirez, and Will County Land Use Program Manager Brigette Roehr for their leadership and support in making this day a success.

Día del Jardín Comunitario en el Centro Comunitario Forest Park

El sábado 17 de mayo, el Centro Comunitario Forest Park del Gobierno del Municipio de Joliet celebró una nueva temporada de crecimiento y esperanza con un Día Especial del Jardín Comunitario.

El evento fue dirigido por Skyler Reed, Coordinador de la Despensa de Comida, y Stephen Rummel-Chadderdon, Jardinero Principal. Se unieron voluntarios de las iglesias CrossRoads, Westbrook y Gente Unida, con el apoyo del Departamento de Uso de Suelo del Condado de Will. Juntos limpiaron, pusieron mantillo y plantaron más de 240 vegetales, hierbas y flores, transformando el jardín en un espacio lleno de vida y posibilidades.

Este jardín no es solo un lugar para cultivar comida, también es un lugar donde los vecinos se reúnen, aprenden y fortalecen la comunidad. Representa nuevos comienzos, trabajo en equipo y esperanza para un futuro mejor para los residentes de la zona.

Joliet Township Government Honors Trustee Raymond Slattery Upon His Retirement

On behalf of Supervisor Alicia Morales, the Joliet Township Government Board formally recognized longtime Trustee Raymond Slattery for two decades of dedicated service during the May 13, 2025, board meeting. Slattery, who is retiring this year, was honored with an honorary resolution adopted unanimously by the Board of Trustees.

First elected in 2005, Slattery served five consecutive terms as Trustee. Over two decades, he played an essential role in guiding Township policies, supporting core services, and promoting transparent and accountable governance.

Known for his attention to detail and collaborative spirit, Slattery earned the respect of fellow board members, Township staff, and residents. His leadership helped strengthen the Township’s foundation and uphold its mission of serving the public with fairness and respect.

Slattery is a Certified Public Accountant with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Business Administration from Benedictine University. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserve and was honorably discharged with the rank of E-5.

A lifelong resident of Joliet, Slattery has been deeply involved in the community. His leadership includes serving as President of the Fox River Valley Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants, Treasurer for Easterseals Joliet Region, President of the Joliet Evening Lions Club, President of the Joliet Historical Museum, and President of the Irish American Society of County Will. He also previously served on the board of a rehabilitation center in Rockford and is currently the financial secretary for the Joliet Knights of Columbus Council #382.

The resolution adopted by the Board extends appreciation for his exemplary service and best wishes for a fulfilling retirement. Raymond Slattery leaves behind a legacy of commitment, integrity, and meaningful contributions to the Joliet Township community.

En nombre de la Supervisora Alicia Morales, la Junta del Municipio de Joliet reconoció oficialmente al miembro de la junta Raymond Slattery por sus 20 años de servicio durante la reunión del 13 de mayo de 2025. Slattery, quien se retira este año, fue honrado con una resolución especial aprobada por todos los miembros de la junta.

Joliet Township’s Community Violence Intervention (CVI) team completes Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training

Congratulations to Joliet Township’s Community Violence Intervention (CVI) team: LeShae Hudson, Community Convener, and Magdalena Campos, Community Liaison/Organizer, on completing the inaugural Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training.

This valuable training is led by retired Joliet Fire Department Captain John Lukancic, now serving as Director of the City of Joliet’s Emergency and Disaster Management Office. Classes are held at the Ozzie and Peggy Mitchell Center, located at 172 S. Chicago Street in Joliet.

This marks the first of many free 9-week CERT courses offered to residents of Joliet and Will County. Participants receive FEMA and Weather Spotting certification and hands-on training in medical operations, search and rescue, and triage.

This monthly gathering includes a Comprehensive Training Module designed to strengthen community response and support systems. This month’s training, “Victim & Family Assistance in Crisis Situations,” will be led by Illinois Youth and Family Services.
