Betty Washington, Trustee, Joliet Township Government
Betty Washington was sworn in as a Trustee for Joliet Township Government in May 2025. She brings a strong background in leadership, community service, and education to her role. Betty enjoyed a 30-year career with AT&T, beginning when it was known as Illinois Bell. She retired in 2002 as a Planning and Budget Manager. Following her retirement, she continued serving her community as a substitute teacher in District 86 and District 204.
Betty currently serves as Secretary and Treasurer of the Silver Cross Healthy Community Commission. She is also a former Joliet Junior College Trustee and has served on the Board of Directors at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management from the University of St. Francis, as well as a Master’s in Training and Development with a concentration in adult learners from the same institution. In addition, she earned a certificate in Community Development and Leadership from Harvard Divinity School.
She is the past president of the NAACP Joliet Branch and has been widely recognized for her community involvement. Her honors include awards from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, the National Hook-Up of Black Women, NAACP, the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, Lebanon District Churches, and the Star Citizen Award from School District 86. Betty also actively volunteers at Fairmont School District 89, mentoring and working with 6th through 8th grade students.
Betty is known for her strong organizational skills and her passion for working with people. Her mission as a Trustee is to serve Joliet Township residents in whatever capacity is needed. She is especially passionate about youth development and violence prevention.
Outside of her work, Betty enjoys traveling, spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and participating in activities with her church community.
