At the June 23, 2026, Board Meeting, the Joliet Township Government Board unanimously passed a Proclamation recognizing this June as Immigrant Heritage Month 2026. This Proclamation aims to honor the histories, cultures, resilience, and contributions of immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and their descendants who have helped shape the United States.
The full text of the proclamation is as follows:
“Proclamation: Immigrant Heritage Month 2026
WHEREAS, the month of June is recognized nationally as Immigrant Heritage Month, a time to honor the histories, cultures, resilience, and contributions of immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and their descendants who have helped shape the United States; and
WHEREAS, Immigrant Heritage Month was established to uplift the stories of individuals and families who have come to this nation from around the world, often seeking safety, dignity, freedom, and opportunity, and whose experiences are deeply woven into the history and identity of this country; and
WHEREAS, immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers are essential to the strength, prosperity, and character of this nation, enriching our culture, sustaining our economy, and strengthening communities across the country through their innovation, labor, civic participation, and leadership. Yet despite these contributions, many continue to face significant barriers to legal protections, healthcare, education, housing, and language access; and
WHEREAS, while the United States has long been seen as a beacon of possibility for people seeking safety, freedom, and a better future, our immigration system remains outdated, overly complex, and is too often marked by obstacles that deny opportunity and undermine basic human dignity, making changes to the system necessary in order to create accessible pathways to citizenship, keep families together, protect the rights of workers and asylum seekers, and ensure that our laws meet the economic and humanitarian needs of the 21st century; and
WHEREAS, meaningful immigration reform is not merely a policy choice but a reaffirmation of our nation’s highest ideals of equality, opportunity, and the belief that all people, regardless of immigration status or country of origin, deserve to live free from discrimination, fear, and injustice and to be treated with fairness and respect under the law; and
WHEREAS, immigrant rights are human rights and it is the responsibility of our communities to foster inclusion, protect the dignity of immigrant, refugee, and asylum-seeking families, and support policies and practices that advance equity, safety, and opportunity for all; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that Joliet Township Government recognizes June as Immigrant Heritage Month and calls upon all residents to honor the lived experiences and contributions o fimmigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and their descendants, to stand in solidarity with these communities, and uphold a commitment to building a just, welcoming, and equitable society where all people are valued, respected, and protected.”

En la reunión del 23 de junio de 2026, la Mesa Directiva del Municipio de Joliet aprobó por unanimidad una Proclamación que reconoce este mes de junio como el Mes de la Herencia de los Inmigrantes 2026. Esta Proclamación honra las historias, culturas, resiliencia y contribuciones de los inmigrantes, refugiados, solicitantes de asilo y sus descendientes que han ayudado a dar forma a los Estados Unidos.

“Proclamación: Mes de la Herencia de los Inmigrantes 2026
CONSIDERANDO QUE, el mes de junio es reconocido a nivel nacional como el Mes de la Herencia de los Inmigrantes, un tiempo para honrar las historias, culturas, resiliencia y contribuciones de los inmigrantes, refugiados, solicitantes de asilo y sus descendientes que han ayudado a dar forma a los Estados Unidos; y
CONSIDERANDO QUE, el Mes de la Herencia de los Inmigrantes fue establecido para destacar las historias de las personas y familias que han llegado a esta nación desde distintas partes del mundo, muchas veces en busca de seguridad, dignidad, libertad y oportunidades, y cuyas experiencias están profundamente entrelazadas con la historia y la identidad de este país; y
CONSIDERANDO QUE, los inmigrantes, refugiados y solicitantes de asilo son esenciales para la fortaleza, prosperidad y carácter de esta nación, enriqueciendo nuestra cultura, fortaleciendo nuestra economía y contribuyendo al desarrollo de las comunidades a través de su innovación, trabajo, participación cívica y liderazgo. Sin embargo, a pesar de estas contribuciones, muchos continúan enfrentando barreras significativas para acceder a protecciones legales, atención médica, educación, vivienda y servicios de acceso lingüístico; y
CONSIDERANDO QUE, si bien los Estados Unidos han sido considerados durante mucho tiempo un símbolo de esperanza para las personas que buscan seguridad, libertad y un mejor futuro, nuestro sistema migratorio sigue siendo obsoleto, excesivamente complejo y con demasiada frecuencia está marcado por obstáculos que limitan las oportunidades y afectan la dignidad humana básica, haciendo necesarias reformas que creen vías accesibles hacia la ciudadanía, mantengan unidas a las familias, protejan los derechos de los trabajadores y solicitantes de asilo, y garanticen que nuestras leyes respondan a las necesidades económicas y humanitarias del siglo XXI; y

CONSIDERANDO QUE, los derechos de los inmigrantes son derechos humanos, y es responsabilidad de nuestras comunidades fomentar la inclusión, proteger la dignidad de las familias inmigrantes, refugiadas y solicitantes de asilo, y apoyar políticas y prácticas que promuevan la equidad, la seguridad y las oportunidades para todos; y
