About Joliet Township Cemeteries
Joliet Township is proud to preserve and maintain three historic cemeteries that serve as resting places for many of our community’s past residents: Oakwood Cemetery, Mound Cemetery, and Zarley Cemetery. These grounds are more than places of remembrance; they reflect the history, heritage, and traditions of Joliet and the surrounding area. Our Township staff ensures that each cemetery is well cared for throughout the year. This includes regular groundskeeping, seasonal maintenance, and supporting families as they make burial arrangements for their loved ones.
Oakwood Cemetery
Oakwood Cemetery in Joliet was incorporated on February 12, 1855, with the first burial taking place on April 15 of the same year. Many of Joliet’s earliest and most prominent citizens and families are laid to rest here, making the cemetery an important part of the city’s history. Oakwood remains an active cemetery and continues to serve the community today. It is located at 1121 Lincoln Highway, Joliet, IL 60432.
Please note, Oakwood Cemetery currently is not selling any new burial lots. Traditional and cremation burial services are provided for existing lot owners. View price list here.
Honoring Our Past, Preserving Our Future: Cemsites for Oakwood Cemetery
Joliet Township has partnered with CemSites to fully digitize Oakwood Cemetery, one of our community’s most historic and cherished landmarks. This initiative marks a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to preserve local history and make it more accessible to the public.
Through this modernization, visitors will soon be able to search for loved ones, view gravesite locations, receive GPS directions, and explore available obituaries, all online.
While the website is under development, Joliet Township is compiling information about notable individuals interred at Oakwood Cemetery, including early settlers, veterans, public servants, and community figures who helped shape the Joliet area.
This project is more than a technological upgrade. It is a way to honor those who came before us and ensure their legacies remain connected to future generations.
Visit the Oakwood Cemetery CemSites page to learn more and follow our progress as we bring this new resource to life.
