Proclamation: International Day of Remembrance of Slavery Victims and the Transatlantic Slave Trade 2026

At the March 10, 2026 Board Meeting, the Joliet Township Government Board unanimously passed a proclamation recognizing this March 25 as International Day of Remembrance of Slavery Victims and the Transatlantic Slave Trade 2026. This proclamation honors and remembers the millions of people of African descent who endured the profound inhumanity and atrocities of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.

The full text of the proclamation is as follows:

“Proclamation: International Day of Remembrance of Slavery Victims and the Transatlantic Slave Trade – March 25

WHEREAS, the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade is observed annually on March 25, as it commemorates the 1807 abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in the United Kingdom and its designation by the United Nations as a day of remembrance, to honor and remember the millions of people of African descent who endured the profound inhumanity and atrocities of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade; and

WHEREAS, between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, the transatlantic slave trade subjected millions to kidnapping, starvation, disease, sexual violence, torture, forced labor, and death during capture, transport, and enslavement, inflicting trauma that extended across lifetimes and generations while generating immense wealth for colonial and imperial powers; and

WHEREAS, the transatlantic slave trade stands as one of the most horrific crimes in human history, making it imperative for the nation to confront its enduring legacy and take meaningful, sustained efforts to right these historic wrongs; and

WHEREAS, this system was maintained by ideologies of white supremacy and racial inferiority that denied the humanity of African people and continue to fuel racism, discrimination, and structural inequities affecting Afro-descendant communities, including locally; and

WHEREAS, enslaved Africans resisted their dehumanization through survival, cultural preservation, and organized resistance, asserting their humanity despite extraordinary violence; and

WHEREAS, remembrance of this history compels each of us to reckon with centuries of injustice and to take action against the inequities that persist today; to take ownership for each of our roles in perpetuating these injustices and inequities; to confront the root causes and systems of oppression that gave rise to the transatlantic slave trade and enabled it to persist for generations; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED, that the Board of Joliet Township Government recognizes March 25 as the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and calls upon governments, institutions, and communities to confront this history honestly and advance reparative actions that promote repair, healing, and justice.

“Proclamación: Día Internacional de Recuerdo de las Víctimas de la Esclavitud y la Trata Transatlántica de Esclavos – 25 de marzo 

CONSIDERANDO QUE, el Día Internacional de Recuerdo de las Víctimas de la Esclavitud y la Trata Transatlántica de Esclavos se observa cada año el 25 de marzo. Esta fecha recuerda la abolición de la trata transatlántica de esclavos en el Reino Unido en 1807 y su reconocimiento por las Naciones Unidas como un día de memoria, para honrar y recordar a los millones de personas de ascendencia africana que sufrieron la profunda inhumanidad y las atrocidades de la esclavitud y la trata transatlántica de esclavos; y 

CONSIDERANDO QUE, entre los siglos quince y diecinueve, la trata transatlántica de esclavos sometió a millones de personas a secuestro, hambre, enfermedades, violencia sexual, tortura, trabajo forzado y muerte durante su captura, transporte y esclavización, causando traumas que afectaron a personas, familias y generaciones, mientras generaba enormes riquezas para potencias coloniales e imperiales; y 

CONSIDERANDO QUE, la trata transatlántica de esclavos es uno de los crímenes más horribles en la historia de la humanidad, lo que hace necesario que nuestra nación enfrente su legado duradero y realice esfuerzos significativos y continuos para corregir estas injusticias históricas; y 

CONSIDERANDO QUE, este sistema se mantuvo a través de ideologías de supremacía blanca e inferioridad racial que negaban la humanidad de las personas africanas y que todavía hoy alimentan el racismo, la discriminación y las desigualdades estructurales que afectan a las comunidades afrodescendientes, incluso a nivel local; y 

CONSIDERANDO QUE, las personas africanas esclavizadas resistieron su deshumanización mediante la supervivencia, la preservación de su cultura y la resistencia organizada, afirmando su humanidad a pesar de la violencia extrema; y 

CONSIDERANDO QUE, recordar esta historia nos llama a reconocer siglos de injusticia y a actuar contra las desigualdades que aún existen hoy; a asumir responsabilidad por nuestras acciones y sistemas que han permitido estas injusticias; y a enfrentar las causas y sistemas de opresión que dieron origen a la trata transatlántica de esclavos y permitieron que continuara por generaciones; 

POR LO TANTO, SE PROCLAMA, que la Mesa Directiva del Municipio de Joliet reconoce el 25 de marzo como el Día Internacional de Recuerdo de las Víctimas de la Esclavitud y la Trata Transatlántica de Esclavos, e invita a gobiernos, instituciones y comunidades a enfrentar esta historia con honestidad y a apoyar acciones reparadoras que promuevan la reparación, la sanación y la justicia.

Proclamation: International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations for the Dignity of Victims – March 25

At the March 10, 2026 Board Meeting, the Joliet Township Government Board unanimously passed a proclamation recognizing this March 25 as  International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations for the Dignity of Victims 2026. This proclamation honors victims and those who have spoken out, and reaffirm that truth, accountability, and human dignity are foundational to a just society.

The full text of the proclamation is as follows:

“Proclamation: International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations for the Dignity of Victims – March 25

WHEREAS, the International Day for the Right to the Truth Concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims affirms that truth and accountability are essential to human dignity and justice; and

WHEREAS, the right to the truth affirms the right of victims and their families to know what occurred, why it occurred, and its lasting impacts and for the states to uphold accountability and have an obligation to investigate violations and preserve historical memory; and

WHEREAS, this observance honors the memory of Óscar Arnulfo Romero, who was assassinated for denouncing violence and injustice and for defending the dignity of the most vulnerable; and

WHEREAS, gross human rights violations have been documented globally, including genocide and forced displacement of Indigenous peoples, enslavement and racial terror, suppression of civil rights, abuses within the criminal legal system, the mistreatment of migrants and asylum seekers, and violations committed or enabled through foreign policy, military actions, detention, and torture, making the pursuit of truth an ongoing responsibility;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED that we recognize this Day, honor victims and those who have spoken out, and reaffirm that truth, accountability, and human dignity are foundational to a just society.
