MOSQUITO CONTROL

Joliet Township Government implemented a mosquito control program many years ago.  The Township, in conjunction with the City of Joliet and the Village of Rockdale, has a contract with Clarke Environmental Mosquito Control to provide scheduled applications of safe and effective mosquito control for the comfort and health of our residents.  With the outbreak and spread of the West Nile Virus, we believe it is even more imperative to provide the necessary control of the mosquito population in Joliet Township.  To obtain information regarding the mosquito control application, such as dates of applications or to report excessive mosquito problems, please contact the Clarke Mosquito Company hotline toll free at (800) 942-2555.

WEED CONTROL

Joliet Township Government provides a weed control program, that conforms to the Illinois, Noxious Weed Law.  This law states that thistles and other noxious weeds growing on property in Joliet Township are a general nuisance.  This includes grass, which is allowed to grow higher than 10 inches.  Once the Township receives a complaint of high grass and weeds, the law states that the property owner be notified in writing of the complaint, and be given ten (10) days in which to bring the property into compliance. If after this time the property has not been brought into compliance, the Township will make arrangements for the property to be cut and the owner will be billed for the cost.

Complaints regarding high weeds and grass in unincorporated Joliet Township may be directed to the Supervisor’s Office at (815) 726-4781.

ANIMAL CONTROL

Joliet Township’s Animal Control Center bears the responsibility for sheltering stray or unwanted dogs and cats that are available for adoption at the Center.  The Center has a population of puppies, kittens, and adult animals available for adoption.  In an attempt to control the animal population, any adopted animal from the Center must be spayed or neutered as part of the adoption agreement.

Joliet Township Government’s Animal Control Ordinance states that no stray animals shall be permitted upon the public thoroughfares or public property in Joliet Township.  Through intergovernmental agreements with the City of Joliet, the Village of Rockdale, and the City of Crest Hill, the Animal Control staff is also responsible for Animal Control within these municipalities

Animal Control Patrol Wardens respond to calls reporting loose and stray animals, to ensure they are picked up and brought back to the center in an effort to ensure the safety of the public.  An Animal Control Patrol Warden is available on call 24 hours a day for emergency situations involving stray animals or abused animals during hours the Center is closed.

The staff at the Animal Control Center also takes calls for lost animals and attempts to assist the owner in locating a lost animal in the event that animal has been picked up and brought into the Animal Control Center.
